Description:
Science: Located off Monterey Bay on the central California coast of the continental United States, the data depcits several examples of seafloor topography and geomorphic diversity. The data include examples of canyons, fans, sea channels, mass wasting, and sediment fields. The most prominent feature of the area is a submarine canyon, Monterey Canyon, which is approximately the same size as the Grand Canyon located in the southwestern region of continental United States.
Image: The image was generated from a gridded data file which contains depth values, in meters, at a fixed interval in both the row and column direction.
Generation: Data were collected and/or processed on the following computer systems: Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) PDF 11/84, Control Data Corporation (CDC) cyber 170-815, and Dec micro VAX II.
The gridded file was created via Radian Corporation's Contour Plotting System (CPS1) software. The grid is mesh of equally spaced Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) points at a 250 meter interval on the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD 1983).
